A single-span Town lattice truss 161' 7" over Big Clouds Creek. Located:
Southeast of Smithonia, Georgia on abandoned roadway. Directions:
From Smithonia, Georgia go south on Smithonia Road (CR 2164) to Chandler
Silver Road, on the left, then 0.1 mile to the bridge, on the right.
Or, from Lexington, Georgia at the jct. of US 78 west and SR 22 north,
go north 7.4 miles on SR 22 to Smithonia Road (CR 2164), on the left; go
2.3 miles to Chandler Silver Road, on the right, then go 0.1 mile to the
bridge, on the right. The longest single-span covered bridge remaining
in Georgia, as well as the longest authentic historic single-span covered
bridge in the Southeastern United States. Repairs to the structure
were completed in April 1998 at a cost of $125,840.00. Many boards
to the sides and portals were replaced as well as a new corrugated tin
roof. Located in an isolated woodland area, on an abandoned roadway
crossing heavily wooded Big Clouds Creek, the bridge was bypassed in 1986,
and closed to motor traffic. Also know as the Big Cloud Creek
Covered Bridge, the Smithonia Covered Bridge, the Howard's
Covered Bridge and the Howard Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 1, 1975.
