Elder's Mill Covered Bridge
Oconee County, Georgia
(WGN 10-108-01) (WGCB GA-108-01)   (1897; repaired 1999)  A single-span Town lattice truss 99' over Rose Creek.  Located:  South-southeast of Watkinsville, Georgia on Elder’s Mill Road.  Directions:  From Watkinsville, Georgia at the jct. of US 129/US 441 and  SR 15, go 5.7 miles south on SR 15 to Elder’s Mill Road, on the right; follow Elder's Mill Road 0.7 mile to the bridge.  Originally the covered bridge was built over Calls Creek on the Watkinsville-Athens Road, just north of Watkinsville, Georgia. It was dismantled in 1924, moved to its present location by wagon.  When the structure was moved, numbers were placed on the truss members to aid in its reconstruction, some of which are still visible.  The bridge is still open to motor traffic.   It was once considered unsafe for travel due to termite damage.  By 1974, the oak planks at the bottom of the bridge had fallen into disrepair.   Repairs to the bridge were completed in 1999 at a cost of $162,030.00. It is one of only a few bridges in Georgia that still carries traffic without help from underlying steel beams.  Also known as the Elder’s Covered Bridge and the Rose Creek Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 5, 1994.  (Mar 2006)
