Euharlee Covered Bridge
Bartow County, Georgia
(WGN 10-08-01) (WGCB GA-08-01)  (1886; repaired 1998)   A single-span Town lattice truss 137' 8" over Euharlee Creek.  Located:  In downtown Euharlee, Georgia in a park off Covered Bridge Road.  Directions:  From I-75, exit 288, take SR 113 west 6.0 miles to Covered Bridge Road, on the right, continue 3.2 miles to the bridge in the park, on the left.  Located upstream from a Mill owned and operated by Daniel Lowry (or Lowery), who may have assisted in the construction of the bridge, following the collapse of the previous bridge.  According to the North Georgia Journal, the previous bridge collapsed, causing the death of a local man, a mule and a horse.  The 78 numbers on the upstream members had an X added to distinguish them from the downstream members.  This is the only historic bridge in Georgia with a bridge maker’s mark.  A contract was awarded in November 1977 for $162,998.00 to make extensive repairs, with the repairs being completed in 1998.  The structure is the  second longest single span covered bridge in Georgia.  Closed to motor traffic.  The upstream side of the bridge is heavily wooded, obscuring the bridge when the leaves are out.  In 1997 a museum opened in the old cow shed near the bridge.  Open 12-5 Monday through Friday, the museum (free, but they appreciate donations) houses memorabilia about the bridge as well as Euharlee.  Also known as the Euharlee Creek Covered Bridge, the Lowry Covered Bridge and the Lowery Covered Bridge.  (Mar 2006)
