restored 1977) A three-span Town lattice truss 229' over the South
Fork of the Broad River. Located: Southeast of Comer, Georgia in Watson Mill
Bridge State Park on Covered Bridge Road. Directions: From
Comer, Georgia go south on SR 22 for 3.0 miles after the jct. with SR 72,
to Watson Mill Bridge Road, on the left (no sign - the road is across from
Collier Church Road); go 3.2 miles to Watson Mill Bridge State Park.
In season, there is an admission fee. When photographed on March
15, 2006 no fees were being collected. It was built for just over
$3,000.00. The dam and raceway wall below the bridge were constructed
circa 1905, as part of the old hydro-Electric Plant. It is the longest
covered bridge remaining in Georgia. The structure was restored in
1997 at a cost of $165,880.00. It rests on mortared natural stone
abutments. Later repairs made with cut stones, and four piers, the
south-southwest center pier of concrete construction and the other three
piers are made from natural stone mortared together. The bridge is
still open to motor traffic and is fully exposed from all directions.
Also known as the Broad River Covered Bridge and the Carlton
Covered Bridge. It was was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 5, 1991. (Mar 2006) |
