County, Maine
(WGN
19-14-02) (WGCB ME-14-02): (2000)
A single-span Paddleford truss footbridge 41' 7" over a drainage depression
in a field. Located: On the grounds of Field of Dreams, a recreation
park, in the locality of Unity, Maine, within the Unity, Maine town line.
Directions: In Unity, Maine, at the jct. of US 202/SR 9 and SR 139
East, go east on US 202/SR 9 for 0.4 mile to the park on the left (northwest).
The bridge is located next to the first parking area. After Bert
and Coral Clifford saw the Paddleford truss replica of the Sunday River
Covered Bridge (WGN 19-09-04) that Bill
Dunton had built on his Big Adventure Center (The Big Adventure Covered
Footbridge (WGN
19-09-06)) miniature
golf course, they asked if he would build a similar bridge for them at
the Field of Dreams Park. He agreed and built his second bridge in
2000. It was built in the same, nineteenth-century fashion as his
Sunday River Covered Bridge replica using hand made trunnels and timber
joinery. It is covered with unpainted vertical board siding on the
sides and with random width, vertical board siding on the portals.
The deck has lengthwise planks and the roof of is covered with wooden
shakes. There are no windows in the structure, but the upper half
of each side is open, exposing the intricate Paddleford truss timbers.
