Oxford
County, Maine
(WGN 19-09-02)
(WGCB ME-09-02): (1857; reinforced 1988) Single-span Paddleford
truss strengthened with laminated wooden arches that were added, after
being built, 109' over the old flood channel of the Saco River. Located:
Three miles northwest of East Fryeburg, Maine. Directions:
From the jct. of US 302 and ST 5, on the east end of Main Street in Fryeburg,
Maine, follow US 302 east for 5.5 miles then turn left on Hemlock Bridge
Road. The bridge is 6.9 miles down Hemlock Bridge Road, which starts
out as a blacktop but changes into a rather narrow dirt road. Because
of its location in an old flood plane channel, the granite piers at the
ends of the bridge were built higher to raise the bridge to prevent it
from being washed away during floods. The bridge was reinforced to
carry local traffic in 1988 and is still in service. (Sep 2003) |
