Lowe's Covered Bridge
Piscataquis County, Maine
(WGN 19-11-01 #2)  (WGCB ME-1-01 #2)(1990)  A single-span Long truss 146' 3" over the Piscataquis River.  Located:  East north east of Sangerville, Maine on an unnamed road.  Directions:  In Guilford, Maine at the jct. of SR 6/SR 15/SR 16 and SR 23, go east on SR 6/SR 15/SR 16 for 2.3 miles to Lowe’s Bridge Road on the right (south); turn right to cross the bridge.  Parking is available on the south side of the bridge or at the roadside rest on the north side.  The first bridge that was built at this site in 1830, was destroyed by floodwaters in 1843.  In 1857 a sum of  $500.00 paid to provide the abutments for a new span, and $250.00 for the lumber and labor.  That bridge stood for 130 years until it  was washed away by the flood of April 1, 1987.  A modern covered bridge, patterned after the original, was built on the original abutments on August 23, 1990, at a total cost of $640,000.00.  The bridge is between the towns of Gilford, Maine and Sangerville, Maine and is still in use.  The portal entrance is double sided with overlapped, unpainted, one by eight inch, vertical board siding for the first seventeen feet five inches.  The sides on the bridge span are similarly treated and its roof is covered with wooden shakes, which are laid in unusually close courses.  The deck consists of contemporary glulam panels covered with a single lengthwise plank runner in the traffic area.  Also known as the Lowe Covered Bridge, the Lowes Covered Bridge, the New Low Covered Bridge and the Low's Covered Bridge.    (May 2006)
