Penobscot
County, Maine
(WGN
19-10-02) (WGCB ME-10-02): (1876;
reinforced 1984) A single-span Long truss 86' over Kenduskeag Stream.
Located: North northwest of Kenduskeag, Maine on Robyville Road.
Directions: 2.5 miles north northwest of Kenduskeag, Maine on SR
25 then left on Cushman Road 1 mile and left again on Robyville Road 0.3
mile to the bridge. Built at a cost of $1,375.06. This bridge
is unique being, the only covered bridge completely covered with wooden
shingles on both the sides and portals, including approximately twelve
feet of the inside of the portal opening. According to a bronze plaque
mounted at the bridge site, this is the "oldest surviving example of a
Long truss system used in a Maine Covered Bridge." A great deal of
work has been done to this bridge to keep it in good condition. In
1984 the bridge was reinforced with four steel I beams placed inconspicuously
under it to allow normal traffic that would use a small country road.
The structure rests on its original cut stone abutments which have been
reinforced with concrete. It was listed on the National Register
of Historic Places on February 16, 1970 and designated a Maine Historic
Engineering Landmark on January 17, 2002. (May 2006) |
