The Betty Ruth Covered Bridge

Located:  East of Flintstone, Maryland, at 23200 Romsburg Lane.  Directions:  From Flintstone, Maryland, at I-68, exit 56, Williams Road, go south on Williams Road 0.2 mile to National Pike; go left 1.2 miles to Dry Ridge Road, on the left; follow 0.6 mile to 23200 Romsburg Lane, on the right, follow 0.5 mile to the residence. On private property so request permission to visit.  The cover was added to an existing Stringer bridge in 1993.  A sign reading "The Betty Ruth," in black letters on a white background is mounted over the right downstream portal. It is supported by two steel I-beam stringers, set on old concrete abutments, with new concrete poured on top and the wing walls, with broken rock extensions restrained by baling wire.  The floor of the structure is transverse planking with three plank wide wheel treads.  It is painted red and has vertical boards on the sides and gables, and has eye level openings running the length of the bridge.  It has light red-brown asphalt shingles covering the high, low peaked roof.  The bridge is the longest non authentic covered motor vehicle bridge in Maryland.  Also known as the Betty Ruth Covered Bridge.   (Oct 2005)
