Loy's Station Covered Bridge
Frederick County, Maryland
(WGN 20-10-03 #2)  (WGCB MD-10-03 #2):  (1994)  A two-span multiple Kingpost truss 89' 4" over Owens Creek.  Located:   Loys, Maryland on Old Frederick Road.  Directions:  From jct. US 15 and SR 77 in Thurmont, Maryland take SR 77 east where it joins with SR 550.  When the routes split, stay right on SR 77.  Continue north on SR 77 east 2.4 miles to right on Old Frederick Road for 0.3 mile to the bridge. There is ample parking in the park next to the bridge.  Originally built as a single-span, multiple Kingpost truss bridge in 1880. Sometime prior to 1937, steel I-beam stringers were added, along the central pier converting it to a two-span bridge.  On June 17, 1991, a stolen pickup truck was parked inside the bridge and set on fire, destroying the structure.  In 1993-94, it was rebuilt.  It has a single-span fourteen panel, single-post, multiple Kingpost truss that is now supported by nine steel I-beam stringers, set on mortared cut stone abutments, with a central poured concrete pier creating a two-span structure.  Named after the nearby Western Maryland Railway stop, Loy's Station.  It is the only multiple kingpost truss bridge remaining in Maryland and one of five authentic covered bridges still carrying motor traffic in Maryland.  Also known as the Loy's Covered Bridge and the Owens Creek Covered Bridge. It was listed with two other covered bridges on the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 1978, becoming one of the first Historic Covered Bridge in Maryland to be so listed.  (Feb 2004)
