Utica Mills Covered Bridge
Frederick County, Maryland
(WGN 20-10-01)  (WGCB MD-10-01):  (c. 1850; restored 1997)  A two-span multiple Kingpost truss with Burr arch 101' 4" over Fishing Creek.  Located:  In Utica, Maryland on Utica Road.   Directions:  From north US 15 and US 340 at jct. US 15 and US 40, in Frederick, Maryland take US 15 and US 40 north 1 exit staying on US 15 for about 7.6 miles to right on old Frederick Road, then 1.3 miles to left on Utica Road 0.3 mile to the bridge.  Utica Mills Bridge was formerly the Devilbiss Covered Bridge  which was a two-span structure over the Monocacy River.  The Devilbiss Bridge was severely damaged by the Johnstown Flood on June 1, 1889, losing one of its two spans.  The surviving span was then disassembled and moved about 2 miles to Utica, Maryland and reassembled.  One of the two oldest authentic covered bridges remaining in Maryland and at 21' wide, it is also the widest.  The bridge has a single-span, ten-panel, single-post, multiple Kingpost truss, sandwiched by a Burr Arch, that is unusual because the vertical tension members slant away from the top of the center Kingpost.  The bridge was restored in 1997 and still carries motor traffic.  Also known as the Utica Covered Bridge.  Listed along with two other bridges to the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 1978.   (Feb 2004)
