Franklin
County, Massachusetts
(WGN 21-06-01)
(WGCB MA-06-01): (c. 1869) A single-span multiple
Kingpost truss 106' over the South River. Located: In Conway,
Massachusetts. Directions: From north I-91, take exit 25 and
continue on SR 116 north for 6.1 miles to the bridge on the left.
On SR 116, there is almost no where to safely park. It is recommended
that you drive south to the first road on the right, then make a right
on Main Pond Road and then a right onto Orchard Street. The bridge
is also completely fenced in. In 1939, it was considered unsafe (due
to a hurricane and flood), so that heavy traffic was routed through Orchard
Street. For years the structure had been use to bring large quantities
of milk and produce from farms in the Poland District of the town. The
bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1985. In 1995 the
bridge was closed to all traffic for reconstruction and is currently suspended
on blocks. It should be noted, though, that as of September 15, 2003,
there was no sign that any restoration work had begun. However, recent information indicated that the Massachusetts State Higway Department has begun rehabilitating the bridge to once again carry vehicular traffic. Construction is almost completed, but the rededication date is unknown. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 1, 1988. (Sep 2003) |
