(WGN
21-09-a #2) (WGCB MA-09-a #2): (1988) A single-span non authentic Stringer truss, 37' 1" over Willard Brook.
Located: In Ashby Township, Massachusetts, southeast of Ashby in Willard Brook State Forest at Damon Pond off SR 119. Directions: From Ashby, Massachusetts, take SR 119 east to the second or east junction with SR 31, go right 0.3 mile on SR 119 to Damon Pond on the right. The covered bridge is to the left below the dam. This structure replaced the original authentic Kingpost bridge built in 1958, which was taken down early in 1988 due to severe deterioration. The bridge was constructed using pressure treated lumber and was dedicated on June 25, 1988. The structure is supported by two utility pole stringers, set on rocks and cement blocks and shored up by a central support consisting of two upright
timber posts, resting on flat rocks mid stream and a timber beam across the top. Some additional support is derived from a half-height simulated Kingpost truss constructed with long diagonal compression braces bolted to the utility pole stringers with iron rods. The floor consists of crosswise thick planking secured to the stringer, the sides are open with a plank handrail running between the roof support posts. Unfinished vertical boards enclose the gables and Cedar shingles covers the roof. Also known as the Ashby Covered Footbridge. (Sep 2004) |
