Newport-Corbin Covered Bridge
Sullivan County, New Hampshire
New Hampshire No. 17  (WGN  29-10-05 #2) (WGCB NH-10-05 #2):  (c. 1845; rehabilitated 1980; burned 1993, rebuilt 1994) A single-span Town Lattice truss 96' 2" over Croyden Branch of the Sugar River.  Located:  NNW of Newport, New Hampshire on Corbin Road.  Directions:  1.7 miles north of Newport, New Hampshire on SR 10 then left on Corbin Road about a mile to the bridge.  In May 1979 the state suggested closing the bridge, but the town reduced the posted weight limit from six to three tons. Rehabilitated by the state in 1980 at a cost of $43,000 with the project funded, in part, with a federal Historic Preservation Fund matching grant from the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior through the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources. The bridge was re posted for a six ton limit.  Then on May 24, 1993, the bridge was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in October 1994.  When the bridge was rebuilt, it was moved from the construction site to the bridge site with a team of oxen, a trip requiring three days which turned into a townwide festival that attracted about ten thousand people.  The original Corbin Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  (Sep 2003)
