Merimack
County, New Hampshire
New Hampshire No.
12 (WGN 29-07-05) (WGCB NH-07-05): (c. 1853;
repaired 1871; rebuilt 1963-64; repaired 1990) A single-span
Long truss with an auxiliary Queenpost system 76' 5" feet over the Warner
River. Located: South of SR 103 at Warner Village. Directions:
1 mile west of I-89 at exit 8 on SR 103 then 0.2 mile left on Joppa Road
to the bridge. The classification of the truss system is subject
to debate. The Warner Historical Society in its 1974 publication,
Warner N.H. 1880-1974, classified the bridge as a Haupt-type truss. However
the New Hampshire Department of Transportation indicates it is a multiple
Kingpost with an auxiliary Queenpost system. However, based on the
National Register of Historic Places nomination form, it would appear to
be classified as a Long truss with an auxiliary Queenpost system.
The abutments were repaired in 1871. It was rebuilt in 1963-1964
and in 1990, the state repaired the diagonal and the portal, and installed
a new metal roof. This is one of the oldest standing covered bridges
in use today. Also known as the Joppa Road Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places November 21, 1976.
