Sandwich-Durgin Covered Bridge
Carroll County, New Hampshire 
New Hampshire No. 45 (WGN 29-02-07) (WGCB NH-02-07):  (1869; repaired 1967-68; rehabilitated 1983) A single-span Paddleford truss with added Burr arches 96' feet over the Cold River. Located:  One and one-half miles north of SR 113A, two miles east of North Sandwich, New Hampshire on Durgin Road.  Directions: About 1 mile north of North Sandwich, New Hampshire on SR 113A then right on Fellows Hill Road for 1.3 miles then left to the bridge.  This is the fourth bridge on this site, the others were washed away in 1844, 1865 and 1869.  It is named for James Holmes Durgin who ran a nearby grist mill. The bridge was also a link in the underground slave railroad from Sandwich, New Hampshire to North Conway, New Hampshire. The structure was repaired and strengthened in 1967-1968 and rehabilitated in 1983 at a cost of $48,000. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places September 22, 1983.  (Sep 2003)
