New Hampshire No.
9
(WGN 29-07-08) (WGCB NH-07-08): (1853; rebuilt 1965; rehabilitated 1982;
closed and rehabilitated 1993-96) A combination of
Long truss with Burr arches 164' 6" long with a clear span of 153' 6" over
the Contoocook River. Located:
At the village
of West Hopkinton, New Hampshire on Clement Hill Road. Directions:
2.5 miles west of I-89 at exit 6 on SR 127 then right on Clement Hill Road
to the bridge. Built by Horace Childs of Henniker, New Hampshire
with the help of his brothers Enoch and Warren and cost $300.25. The Burr
type construction is unusual in that solid timber arches are fitted end
to end and bolted to the side timbers to form the basic design. Most arches
in other designs are laminated. The structure was rebuilt by the
state in 1965 at a cost of $9,521 and rehabilitated in June of 1982 at
a cost of $9,000. From 1993 to 1996, the bridge was closed for major repairs. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places November 21, 1976. (Sep 2002) |
