Merrimack County, New Hampshire
New Hampshire No. 15 (WGN 29-07-02) (WGCB NH-07-02): (1882; repaired 1949; 1972; rehabilitated 1981; under repair 2003) A single-span Town lattice truss 64' 6" over the Blackwater River. Located: West of Andover, New Hampshire on Lorden Road. Directions: About 1.5 miles west of jct. US 4 and SR 11 on US 4, then left on Lorden Road 0.2 mile to the bridge. The bridge is named for a prominent family who lived for many years in one of the old homesteads in town. The bridge has been damaged only once, in 1972, when ice tore off several planks. The bridge was rehabilitated by the town in 1981. It was lifted by two cranes and moved to a temporary site only a few feet above the water level. The engineers had to work quickly to make sure the abutment repairs were completed and the bridge relocated before heavy rains and rising waters could carry it away. When we visited the bridge in September 2003, as the photographs show, there was scaffolding in place on the east side and repairs to the roofs wooden shakes was in progress. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. (Sep 2003) |
