A single-span Paddleford truss 94' 3" over the Israel River. Located:
In the town of Lancaster, New Hampshire on Mechanic Street. Directions:
From jct. US 3 and US 2, go east on US 2 then left on Mechanic Street 0.3
mile to the bridge. At a town meeting on July 19, 1862, shortly after
the bridge was completed, the citizens of Lancaster, New Hampshire voted
to instruct the selectmen to put a sign board at each end of the bridge
that prohibited driving across the bridge at a pace faster than a walk.
Its abutments were repaired in 1967 by the state. Also known
as the Israel River Covered Bridge. It is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places. (Oct 2003) |
