County, New Hampshire
New Hampshire No.
67 (WGN 29-05-16) (WGCB NH-06-16): (1991) A single-span
Howe truss 76' over the Mascoma River.
Located: Off Riverside Drive at Baker's Crossing near Lebanon, New
Hampshire. Directions: Follow I-89 to US 4 south to Riverside
Drive then about a mile to the bridge. There is a sidewalk on the
upstream side of the bridge. Between 1780 and 1790 there was
an open timber bridge without railings standing at this location.
Then, according to town records, that bridge was either repaired or replaced
in 1804. In 1878, the open timber bridge, which appears to have been a
Queenpost truss with the truss work boarded up, as replaced by a new Howe
truss covered bridge. It was removed in 1952 and replaced with a
Bailey Bridge. The Bailey bridge was replaced by the current bridge,
built by Arnold Graton Associates and dedicated on September 4, 1991. The
current structure was constructed in a manner which replicates
the traditional style of covered bridges. It has not reached the 50 years
age criteria for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
