Royal Crest Estate Covered Footbridge

(WGN 29-06-e)  (WGCB NH-06-e)  (1970) (Private) A three-span non authentic Stringer truss footbridge 42' 4" over a Spit Brook. Located: In Nashua Township south of Nashua, New Hampshire, at Royal Crest Estates off Spit Brook Road. Directions: From Nashua, New Hampshire, take US 3 south to exit 1 (Spit Brook Road) to left on New Castle Drive at the traffic light to guard post at the entrance to Royal Crest Estates. It is located across the road from the apartment complexes rental Office . The bridge is located in a gated apartment complex so you must ask permission to visit. The structure is supported by a triple plank stringer, placed on edge at the outside, and timber stringers placed on edge at the center, set on poured concrete abutments and two piers, a poured concrete pier toward the west northwest end and four timber posts placed on poured concrete footing serve as a pier toward the east southeast end. Crosswise deck boards, fastened to the stringers, constitute the flooring. Vertical tongue and groove boards cover the sides, with six large window openings along each side. Vertical tongue and groove boarding also cover the portals. The roof is supported along each side by seven timber posts. The bridge is painted dark brown on the exterior and interior and has a wood shake roof. There is a dark brown painted double rail handrail extending up the eight wooden steps from the west northwest portal. (May 2005)
