44 (WGN 29-05-10 #2) (WGCB NH-05-10 #2): (1850; destroyed by
arson 1993; rebuilt 2001) A single-span Long truss, with added Burr arches,
176' over the Baker River. Location: West of Plymouth, New
Hampshire on Smith Bridge Road. Directions: I-93, Exit 26 take
SR 25 and SR 3A west approximately 2.5 miles to right on Smith Bridge Road.
The original 1850 bridge was destroyed by fire on April 16, 1993.
The old span was 149' 2", but after the 3.3 million dollar reconstruction
in 2001 was extended to 176'. May be the strongest wooden covered
bridge in the world. Reconstruction materials consisted of laminated
Southern Pine with a deck surface of oak. Capable of sustaining the
weight of 2 18 wheelers passing each other. Also
known as the Plymouth-Smith Covered Bridge. (Sep 2003) |
