County, New Hampshire
New Hampshire No.
65 (WGN 29-05-19) (WGCB NH-05-19): (1990) A single-span Town lattice
truss 61' over the Squam River. Located: On River Street in
Ashland, New Hampshire where the Squam River flows from Little Squam Lake.
Directions: I-93 exit 24, take US 3 east to Ashland, New Hampshire.
Just off US 3 on River Street. The bridge replaces a steel and concrete
bridge that was condemned by the state. After the condemnation, the
state proposed a two-lane steel bridge for this site. However, the
citizens of Ashland decided they would prefer a one lane covered bridge.
Subsequently, at the 1988 town meeting, they voted to place $35,000 in
a fund earmarked for building a new covered bridge. The balance of funds
were raised by the Squam River Covered Bridge Committee of the Ashland
Historical Society with additional funding from special events such as
bake sales and dinners. But the majority of the money came from direct
contributions from over 500 donors. The bridge was constructed by Milton
Graton and Sons and officially dedicated on July 1, 1990. It has
not reached the 50 year age criteria to be listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. (Sep 2003) |
