Swanzey-Sawyer's Crossing Covered Bridge

New Hampshire No. 6  (WGN 29-03-05) (WGCB NH-03-05): (c. 1771 rebuilt 1859)  A two-span Town lattice truss 158' 5" with clear spans of 61' 6" and 77' 3" over the Ashuelot River.  Located:  On Sawyer's Crossing Road in Swanzey, New Hampshire.  Directions:  About 3 miles south of Keene, New Hampshire on SR 10 then left on Sawyer's Crossing Road 2 miles to the bridge.  The original bridge cost 53 pounds, six shillings.  The bridge was reconstructed in 1859 at a cost of $1,735.94.  Also known as The Arthur Godfrey Covered Bridge because in 1953 the bridge was used by Arthur Godfrey as a tie-in with a Chesterfield cigarette Christmas carton.  In response, Governor Hugh Gregg flew to New York to present Mr. Godfrey with an honorary deed to the bridge making him an owner.  In 1983, the bridge was repaired at a cost of $61,028.15.  The name "Cresson Bridge 1859" is painted on a plaque mounted on the bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places November 14, 1978.  (Sep 2002)
