Eagleville Covered Bridge
Washington County, New York
(WGN 32-58-01)  (WGCB NY-58-01)  (1858; renovated date unknown; repaired 1998-99)  A single-span Town lattice truss 101' over the Battenkill River.  Located:  In the town of Jackson and Salem, New York, west of SR 313 at Eagleville, New York.  Directions:  From Cambridge, New York, at jct. of SR 22 and SR 313 take SR 313 toward Vermont for 6 miles.  Turn left onto Eagleville Road to the bridge. The bridge has been given new paint, sides, and shake shingles several times, and currently has light-brown paint on the sides and white paint on the portals. There are no openings under the eaves.  The exterior has tongue and groove plank siding.  The deck planking is laid lengthwise in 12 foot sections with a crosswise member between the sections and the roof is covered with shake shingles.  Its abutments and wing walls are both made of concrete.  It has inside weather boards. Fishermen used to remove sideboards to fish the Battenkill River.  To prevent further damage, a hinged door was built into the side of the bridge to allow fishing access. A chain link fence has been added to the lower three fourths of the truss system to solve this problem.  There is exterior metal armoring at both abutments.  The bridge was closed for repairs in 1998 and reopened in 1999.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 8, 1978.  (May 2005)
