Shushan Covered Bridge
Washington County, New York
(WGN 32-58-02)  (WGCB NY-58-02)  (1858; renovated prior to WW II; realigned 1963)  (Private)  A two-span Town lattice truss 161' over the Battenkill River. Located: In Shushan, New York next to CR 61.  Located:  In the town of Jackson-Salem, New York east of SR 22 beside CR 61 in the village of Shushan, New York.  This bypassed covered bridge is now a private, nonprofit museum.  Before World War II, a facelift gave the bridge a modern appearance.  New concrete abutments to replace the marble, a concrete center pier, a new roof, a coat of venetian red paint, and white portals for better visibility were added improvements.  There are no openings under the eaves.  The deck planking is lengthwise with crosspieces and it has a metal roof. The bridge has a total of 12 diamond shaped windows, with five per side and 2 in the west portal.  All truss timbers are either white pine, spruce or hemlock fastened at the joints by trunnels of either red oak or locust.  The bridge was bypassed in 1963 and the structure was moved over a few feet and put on a new foundation to make way for a high level highway bridge built just to the south.  Currently only one end of the structure is set into abutments on shore while the other end is attached to the new pier.  Museum Hours:  1:00 to 4:00 PM  Season:  Memorial Day Weekend to July 4th Weekend - Sat, Sun, and Holidays.  July 4th Weekend to Labor Day Weekend - Daily except Mondays and Tuesdays.  Labor Day Weekend to Columbus Day Weekend - Sat, Sun and Holidays.
