Lawrence
County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-37-02) (WGCB PA-37-02): (1889;
restored 1999) A single-span Burr arch truss 133' 1" over Neshannock
Creek. Located:
On Covered Bridge Road, just north of Neshannock Falls, Wilmington Township,
Pennsylvania. Directions: In Volant, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 168
and SR 208, go south on SR 168 for 1.2 miles to Gerber Road, turn right
on Gerber Road and go 1.4 miles to Covered Bridge Road (no name was visible),
and turn right to the bridge. Or from the jct. of SR 956 and Covered Bridge
Road, north of Neshannock Fall's, Pennsylvania go north on Covered Bridge
Road for 0.1 mile to the bridge. The bridge has been heavily reinforced
with steel beams under the deck of the Burr arch truss system. This reinforcement
has allowed the load limit to be increased to ten tons, which is considerable
more than the three ton limit typical of covered bridges. In 1999, the
bridge was improved by a $600,000.00 restoration project. The structure
rests on cut stone abutments that appear to have been laid dry with road
level cut stone wing walls. It is covered with white painted vertical
board and batten siding on both the sides, portals, and splash panels.
Open under the eaves for ventilation. The deck consists of crosswise
1" x 6" boards set on edge and laminated into sections four feet wide and
the roof is covered with asphalt shingles. Also known as the Bank's
Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic
Places on June 27, 1980. (Oct 2008) |
