Bartram Covered Bridge
Chester and Delaware Counties, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-15-17/38-23-02) (WGCB PA-15-17/PA-23-02):  (1860; bypassed 1941; restored 1996)  A single-span Burr Arch truss 86' 6" over Crum Creek.  Located:  Beside Goshen Road, approximately 1 mile west of Echo Valley, Pennsylvania between Newton Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania and Willistown Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Newtown Square, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 3 and SR 252 go west on SR 3 for 0.8 mile to Boot Road.  Turn right on Boot Road and go 1.2 miles to Goshen Road.  The bridge is just to the left, bypassed by Goshen Road.  It was bypassed in 1941.  There were extensive repairs done prior to its rededication on October 27, 1996 which included new clapboard siding, a new cedar shake roof, an installed fire alarm and sprinkler system.  It is closed to all traffic by a locked, ornamental, wrought iron gate.  The structure rests on stone abutments.  The bridge is covered with barn red painted horizontal siding, however, the portal end siding follows the pitch of the roof.  There is one opposing horizontal window on each side with an awning-type roof over the opening.  It is open under the eaves for ventilation.  The floor consists of crosswise planking and it has a cedar shake roof.  Also known as  the Bartram's Covered Bridge and the Goshen Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980.  (Jun 2008
