Located: Beside Goshen Road, approximately 1 mile west of Echo Valley,
Pennsylvania between Newton Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania and
Willistown Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Directions:
In Newtown Square, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 3 and SR 252 go west
on SR 3 for 0.8 mile to Boot Road. Turn right on Boot Road and go
1.2 miles to Goshen Road. The bridge is just to the left, bypassed
by Goshen Road. It was bypassed in 1941. There were extensive
repairs done prior to its rededication on October 27, 1996 which included
new clapboard siding, a new cedar shake roof, an installed fire alarm and
sprinkler system. It is closed to all traffic by a locked, ornamental,
wrought iron gate. The structure rests on stone abutments.
The bridge is covered with barn red painted horizontal siding, however,
the portal end siding follows the pitch of the roof. There is one
opposing horizontal window on each side with an awning-type roof over the
opening. It is open under the eaves for ventilation. The floor
consists of crosswise planking and it has a cedar shake roof. Also
known as the Bartram's Covered Bridge and the Goshen Covered
Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
on December 10, 1980. (Jun 2008 |
