1992) A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 87' 6"
over Sherman’s Creek. Located: On SR 3003, approximately 2.8
miles east of New Germantown, Jackson Township, Pennsylvania. Directions:
Approximately 2.6 miles east of New Germantown, Pennsylvania, at the jct.
of SR 274 and SR 3003, go south on SR 3003 for 0.2 mile to the bridge.
The Burr arches sandwich a multiple Kingpost truss and the sides and portals
are covered with barn red painted vertical board and batten siding.
The truss timbers are reinforced with steel plates. Its roof is covered
with sheet metal, and the deck consists of lengthwise planking. The
only side openings in the bridge are those under the eaves. The bridge
was closed in 1991 due to severe damage caused by an overweight vehicle.
It has since been completely renovated and is again opened for motor traffic.
There is a plaque mounted on the portal indicating the bridges name as
"Book's
Bridge." However, when the World Guide Number was assigned it
was known as the "Book Covered Bridge" with a alternate name
of the Kaufman Covered Bridge." It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on August 25, 1980. (Sep 2006) |
