Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-36-12) (WGCB PA-36-12) (1892; restored c.
1966;
repaired 1997) A single-span, Burr arch truss 73' 1" over Cocalico
Creek. Located: On Cocalico Creek Road (TR 955). Reamstown,
East Cocalico Township, Pennsylvania. Directions: In Reamstown,
Pennsylvania, from the jct. of SR 272 and Church Street, go south on SR
272 for 0.5 mile to Conestoga Creek Road (TR 746). Turn left (east)
on Conestoga Creek Road (TR 746) for 0.1 mile to Cocalico Creek Road.
The bridge is just to the right on Cocalico Creek Road. The first
bridge built on this site was built in 1892 at a cost of $1,167.
Just one year later, the flood of 1893 carried it downstream, even negotiating
a horseshoe bend. The twisting and turning was too much for the wooden
structure, and it was almost damaged beyond repair. It was however,
rebuilt in 1893 at a cost of $1,025. By 1966, the old bridge
had deteriorated quite extensively, and there was talk of tearing it down.
The local residents rose up in its defense. The bridge was then refurbished.
It has board and batten siding on the sides and portals and a shake
roof. It rests on stone and mortar abutments with stone and mortar
wing walls capped with concrete. One of the abutments was reinforced
with concrete during its reconstruction. Extensive repairs were made
to the bridge in 1997. It is also known as the Cocalico 2 Covered
Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
on December 11, 1980. (Oct 2004) |
