(WGN

A single-span Burr arch truss 167' 7" over Pequea Creek. Located:
On Pequea Campground Road (TR 408), Colemanville, Pennsylvania, between
Conestoga and Martic Townships, Pennsylvania. Directions: In
Colemanville, Pennsylvania, from the jct. of SR 324 and Pequea Campground
Road (TR 408), go south on Pequea Campground Road (TR 408) for 0.2 mile
to the bridge. Initial cost of the 1883 covered bridge was $2,844.
There are accounts of the original structure having been washed off its
abutments twice in its history (1883 and 1972) and each time it was rebuilt
at the same location, using as much of the original material as possible.
The second time, after the 1972 Hurricane Agnes flood, the bridge was lifted
by two cranes and repaired by Amish Carpenters. It was rededicated
in December 1973. In 1991, the bridge was completely rebuilt, at
a cost of $350,000, downstream from the original bridge. The project
was finished enough that the new bridge could be open to traffic in September
1992. The new Burr arches are more angular than the double arched
curves of the original. The new structure rests on stone-faced, concrete
abutments with long, curved, stone-faced, concrete wing walls and parapets.
The siding is composed of vertical boards and batten. The bridge
is also known as the Martic Forge Covered Bridge. It was listed
on the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1980.
