County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-30-25) (WGCB PA-30-25) (c. 1940-43) A
single-span Kingpost truss 31' 10" over Ruff Creek. Located:
On an unnamed road (TR 568) in Lippincott, Morgan Township, Pennsylvania.
Directions: In the west end of Lippincott, Pennsylvania, just south
of SR 221, on TR 568. Also, On I-79 North, take Exit 19 (SR 221),
turn south and follow SR 221 for 3 miles to the bridge on the right.
The date the bridge was built is in question. Some accounts indicate
it was constructed in 1940 while others indicate that due to the shortage
of steel during WW II, it was not built until 1943. The bridge boasts
a slightly unusual design, as it is covered with white horizontal clapboard
siding on both the exterior sides, part of the interior sides and the portals.
Its roof is covered with sheet metal, and the deck is covered with crosswise
planking. The structure rests on one abutment of stone and mortar
reinforcement with concrete, and one of all concrete. and they extend to
form short concrete wing walls approximately one and one half feet above
the road level. The Kingpost truss is heavily reinforced with five
steel I beams. The bridge is also known as the Lippincott Covered
Bridge. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
on June 22, 1979. (Oct 2005) |
