repaired 1996) A single-span Burr arch truss 118' 11" over Muncy
Creek. Located: On Champion Hill Road (TR 310), just south
of Sonestown, Pennsylvania. Directions: Along US 220, approximately
1 mile south of Sonestown, Pennsylvania, the bridge is located on Champion
Hill Road, just to the east of US 220. Its Burr truss is angular
rather than the usual, smoothly shaped arch. The structure
is covered with vertical boards on both sides and the portals, and rests
on stone and mortar abutments with wing walls that are below road level.
It is painted barn red both inside and out and has a shake roof.
The deck consists of runners laid over crosswise planking. It has
lengthwise openings under the eaves, no windows and no steel reinforcements.
The bridge was closed in January 1996 due to damage caused by flooding.
It was repaired within sixty days at a cost of $89,000.00, and was promptly
reopened. Also known as the Sonestone Covered Bridge. It was
listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 1980.
