Day Covered Footbridge
Washington County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-63-12) (WGCB PA-63-12):  (1875; restored 2001)  A single-span Queenpost truss, 41' 3"  over Short Creek.  Located:  On TR 339, 1.3 miles east of Sparta, Morris Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Sparta, Pennsylvania,  at the jct. of SR 18 and SR 3033, go north on SR 18 for 1.3 miles to a road leading to the right.  The bridge is just off of SR 18.    It was closed in May 2000 for some restoration work and reopened in 2001.  The structure rests on one abutment made of stone and mortar reinforced with concrete and a second abutment that is all cement.  It has short wing walls that extend into short parapets about two feet above road level at each approach. The bridge is barn red inside and outside and has vertical board siding on both the sides and portals.  There are two parallel windows on each side near the ends, in addition to the eve openings.  The floor consists of crosswise planking and a sheet metal roof that projects beyond the entrances to provide additional weather protection for the interior.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1979.  (Oct 2005)
