County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-50-16) (WGCB PA-50-16) (1889) A single-span
multiple Kingpost with double Burr arches truss 174' 7" over Sherman’s
Creek. Located: On Pine Hill Road, Dellville, Wheatfield Township,
Pennsylvania. Directions: In Dellville, Pennsylvania, where
SR 2002 makes a ninety degree turn, Pine Hill Road goes to the southwest.
The bridge is visible from this intersection on Pine Hill Road. This
is the most easterly covered bridge spanning Sherman’s Creek. It
is the longest and widest bridge in Perry County. It has high double
Burr arches (one on top of the other), reinforced with additional diagonal
bracing, that sandwich the multiple Kingpost structure. It is painted
barn red, and trimmed with white. It has vertical board and batten
siding on both the sides and the portal and a metal roof. The deck
consists of crosswise planking which, is overlaid with lengthwise planking.
The bridge has three windows on the southeast side and two on the northwest
side in addition to the openings under the eaves. The structure rests
on concrete abutments and a center concrete pier and its stone and mortar
wing walls and parapets at the northeast end have been rebuilt Those
at the southwest end look like the original ones, however, they have been
reinforced with concrete. The bridges structure has been strengthened
with steel beams and tie rods under the deck. It was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places on August 25, 1980. (Sep
