Erskine Covered Bridge
Washington County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-63-15) (WGCB PA-63-15):  (1845)  A single-span Queenpost truss, 48' over Branch of Middle Wheeling Creek.  Located:  On Erskine Road, approximately 3 miles south of West Alexander, West Finley Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In West Alexander, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of Main Street and Maple Avenue (SR 3023), go south on Maple Avenue (SR 3023) for 2.75 miles to Middle Creek Road (SR 3018), turn right on Middle Road (SR 3018) and go 0.55 mile to Erskine Road.  The bridge is just to the left on Erskine Road.  Alternate directions:  From I-70, Exit 1 take CR 3023  2.3 miles, right on Middle Road (CR 3018) 0.6 mile and  just left on TR 314.  South of West Alexander, Pennsylvania.  This is the most Westerly covered bridge in Pennsylvania.  Located less than one mile from the Ohio/Pennsylvania state line, it is the oldest remaining covered bridge in Washington County.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments with short wing walls which have been reinforced with concrete.  It has vertical board siding on both sides and the portals and is painted barn red inside and outside  The roof is sheet metal and a deck of crosswise planking.  There are two parallel windows on each side, located near the ends, and narrow eve opening on both sides.  Also known as the Erskin's Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1979.  (Oct 2008)
