In White Deer, Pennsylvania, from the jct. of SR 1011 and SR 1010, go west
on SR 1010 for 1.6 miles to Gray Hill Road (TR 514). Turn left (south)
on Gray Hill Road (TR 514) for 0.1 mile to the bridge. The posted
load limit for this bridge is thirty one tons except with combinations
then it is 36 tons. The average load limit for a covered bridge is
between two and five tons. This high limit was made possible by placing
eight large I-beams under the deck of the original structure. These
I-beams rest on concrete reinforcements to the original stone and mortar
abutments. The structures original low stone and mortar wing walls
still stand behind heavy steel guardrails. The bridge is covered
with vertical board and batten siding, painted white on the portals and
barn red on the sides. It has a sheet metal roof and the deck is
covered with lengthwise planking. The only openings are the lengthwise
ones under the eaves. The deck was replaced in 1992. Also known
as the Horsham Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on February 8,1980. (Sep 2006) |
