Fischtner Covered Bridge
Bedford County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-05-21)  (WGCB PA-05-21)  (1880) (Private)  A single-span multiple Kingpost truss 56' 1" over Gladdens Run.  Located:  On a private road, in Palo Alto, Londonderry Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Palo Alto, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 96 and SR 3002, go west on SR 3002 for 0.1 mile.  The bridge is just to the left of SR 3002 in a remote, southwestern valley of Bedford County, quite a distance from other county covered bridges.  It is posted by the present owners with “No Trespassing” signs; however, a family member indicated that anyone interested in seeing the bridge is always welcome.  The bridge has shiplapped siding on the lower one-third of the sides and wider, horizontal boards on the inside, making it very easy to see the multiple Kingpost truss structure from the side of the bridge.  The portals are covered with shiplapped siding.  There is a tarred metal roof and a deck with runners laid over the crosswise planking.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments and has no wingwalls or steel reinforcing.  Also known as the Fichtner Covered Bridge and the Palo Alto Covered Bridge.   It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1980.  (Apr 2005)
