County, Pennsylvania
(WGN
38-05-15 #2) (WGCB PA-05-15 #2) (1872; restored
1993) A single-span Burr arch truss 95' 2" over Yellow Creek.
Located: On St. Paul’s Church Road (TR 539), approximately 1 mile
southeast of Yellow Creek, Hopewell Township, Pennsylvania. Directions: In
Yellow Creek, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 26 and Yellow Creek Road (TR 557), go north
on SR 26 for 0.4 mile to Prices Hill Road (SR 1022). Turn right on
Prices Hill Road (SR 1022) and go 0.5 mile to St. Paul’s Church Road (TR
539); turn left to the bridge. This is the seventh bridge built on
this site since the 1860s. It was named for the Hall family, who
owned the adjacent mill from 1823 through 1933. This was one of the
first bridges to benefit from the Pennsylvania Billion Dollar Bridge Fund,
and restoration work began in 1993. It was rededicated on June 11, 1994.
The structure now rests on reconstructed concrete abutments that extend to
road level wingwalls, all of which are faced with sandstone. The
bridge has white, vertical board siding on the lower one-third of the sides,
while the remaining portion is open. The portals are covered with
white, horizontal siding trimmed with deep pink. The interior walls
are also covered to the same height as the exterior. The roof is
covered with corrugated metal, and the deck has runners laid over crosswise
planking. This bridge has a very high Burr arch truss system.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 10,
1980. (Apr 2005) |
