Hewitt Covered Bridge
Bedford County, Pennsylvania 
(WGN 38-05-26)  (WGCB PA-05-26)  (1880; reconstructed 2000)  A single-span Burr arch truss 88' over Town Creek.  Located on Covered Bridge Road (TR 305), approximately 0.4 mile south of Hewitt, Southampton Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  3.3 miles north of the Maryland state line In Hewitt, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 326 and Town Creek Road (TR 306) (there is a sign for the bridge on SR 326), go south on Town Creek Road (TR 306) for 0.3 mile to Covered Bridge Road (TR 305).  Turn left on Covered Bridge Road (TR 305) and go 0.2 mile to the bridge.  The sides of the bridge are almost completely covered with vertical boards and have only length wise openings under the eaves.  The lower three feet of the interior is covered, and does not reflect the common style of the county’s bridges.  The portals are covered with horizontal boards, and the roof is sheet metal.  The deck consists of crosswise planking, and the bridge rests on a stone and mortar abutments on the west end and a concrete abutment on the east end.  There are no wingwalls and no evident steel reinforcements.  There is a cable on one end to help support the side which leans slightly.  The bridge was reconstructed in 2000.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 10, 1980.  (Apr 2005)
