Hollingshead Covered Bridge
Columbia County, Pennsylvania 
(WGN 38-19-34)  (WGCB PA-19-34)(1850; repaired 1999)  A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 116' 10.5" over Catawissa Creek.  Located:  On Old Reading Road, Catawissa, Catawissa Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Catawissa, Pennsylvania from the jct. of SR 42 and SR 487, go south on SR 42 for 0.5 mile to Mountain Road (TR 403).  Turn left on Mountain Road (TR 403) and go 0.5 mile to Old Reading Road.  The bridge is to the left.  The bridge was named for Henry Hollingshead, who owned a nearby mill and cost $1,180.00 to build.  The Burr arches sandwich a multiple Kingpost truss, and the structure rests on stone and mortar abutments, with stone and mortar wing walls and parapets.  The parapets are capped with concrete.  The bridge has red painted vertical board siding and horizontal board portals.  It has a metal roof and deck of runners laid over widely spaced crosswise planking.  Extensive repairs were undertaken during the spring of 1999, at a cost of $410,211.00.  Also known as the County No. 40 Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1979.    (Apr 2006)
