Hunsecker's Mill Covered Bridge
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-36-06 #2)  (WGCB PA-36-06 #2)  (1973)  A single-span, Burr arch truss 180' 8" over Conestoga Creek.  Located:  On Hunsecker Road (SR 1029), between Manheim and Upper Leacock Townships, northeast of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  Northeast of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 23 with Snake Hill Road (SR 1022).  Go north for 0.2 mile to Hunsecker Road (SR 1029); turn left on Hunsecker Road (SR 1029) for 0.7 mile to the bridge.   Originally built in 1848 for $1,988.  The bridge was swept off its abutments several times by flood waters and only the persistence of local citizens convinced state officials to replace it each time with another wooden covered bridge.  These early replacements required teams of mules and wagons to drag the dismantled structure back to its original abutments, which were raised three feet in order to prevent further loss by flood.  The l869 restoration of the bridge lasted until 1973, when Hurricane Agnes completely destroyed it.  Construction on the current replacement covered bridge began in 1973, cost $321,000 and took a period of two years to complete.  It has natural vertical board and batten siding and a red cedar shake roof.  It is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  (Oct 2004)
