Keller's Covered Bridge
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-36-13)  (WGCB PA-36-13)  (1891; removed 2006)  A single-span, Burr arch truss 73' 10" over Cocalico Creek.  Located:  On Rettews Road (TR 656), northwest edge of Akron, Ephrata Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In Akron, Pennsylvania, from the jct. of SR 272 and Main Street, go north on SR 272 for 0.9 mile to Rothsville Road (SR 1018).  Turn left (southwest) on Rothsville Road (SR 1018) for 0.3 mile to Rettews Road (TR 656); turn right on Rettews Road (TR 656) for 0.3 mile to the bridge.   The first bridge on the site was constructed  in 1873 for $2,075 and rebuilt in 1891 after the flood of 1891.  At one time many covered bridges in Lancaster County were whitewashed.  This bridge is the only remaining white bridge in the county.  Locally known as the Guy Bard’s Covered Bridge, this structure was named for a leading Pennsylvania jurist who lived nearby.  In 1996, it was reported that the bridge was to be rebuilt at a cost of $975,000, and moved two road crossings upstream.  However, this had not happen when photographed in October 2004. In 2006, it was bypassed, removed and placed in storage.  In addition to the Guy Bard's Covered Bridge, it is also known as the Cocalico 5 Covered Bridge, the Rettews Covered Bridge and the Keller's Mill Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980.  (Oct 2004)
