(WGN
38-15-15) (WGCB PA-15-15): (1865; restored, 1996)
A single-span Burr arch truss 66' 9" over Valley Creek. Located:
In Valley Forge National Historical Park on Yellow Springs Road (SR 1016),
just west of SR 252, Tredyffrin Township, Pennsylvania. Directions:
From SR 23 in the park at the traffic light, turn onto Valley Forge Creek
Road and the bridge is on the right at the jct. with Yellow Springs Road
(SR 1016). Parking is virtually non existent and we had to
park partly on the pavement at the jct. of Valley Forge Creek Road and
Yellow Springs Road (SR 1016). The bridge was closed and restored
in 1996, at a cost of $193,000.00. The work included new decking,
siding, fire retardant cedar roof shingles, painted steel support beams,
new traffic signs and fresh paint inside and out. It was reopened
in September 1996. The oak timber Burr arch remains comparatively
low to the ground for the entire span of the bridge. The structure
rests on stone and mortar abutments and has stone and mortar wing walls.
Its sides and portals are covered with wide white painted horizontal
clapboard siding. It is open under the eves for ventilation and there
is one opposing horizontal window the entire length of the bridge on each
side with a small awning-type roof over the opening. The deck consists
of wide lengthwise planking reinforced with steel girders and the roof
has cedar shakes. Also known as the Valley Forge Covered Bridge.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15,
1966. (Jun 2008) |
