A two-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch and two Queenpost trusses 132'
4" over Sherman’s Creek. Located: On Kennedy Valley Road (TR
331), on the south edge of Landisburg, Tyrone Township, Pennsylvania.
Directions: In Landisburg, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 233, SR
850, and Carlisle Street, go south on Carlisle Street for 0.1 mile to Kennedy
Valley Road. Turn right on Kennedy Valley Road (TR 331) and go 0.5
mile to the bridge. The bridge has an unusual truss structure in
that the Burr arches sandwich a multiple Kingpost structure that runs the
length of the bridge, and a Queenpost truss overlay the Kingpost truss
for two spans. The Burr arch rests on the abutments with the Queenpost
trusses resting on the abutments at each end and on the pier in the center.
It is covered with barn red, vertical boards and battens on the sides and
portals, a sheet metal roof and a deck of lengthwise planking laid over
crosswise planking. There are two windows on each side located near
the end where the road bends as well as openings running lengthwise directly
under the eaves. There are additional steel reinforcements under
the deck. There is a plaque mounted on the portal indicating the
bridges name as "Rice's Bridge." However, when the World
Guide Number was assigned it was known as the "Landisburg Covered Bridge"
with a alternate name of the Rice Covered Bridge."
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 25,
1980. (Sep 2006) |
