A two-span non authentic historic Stringer truss over Licking Creek.
Located: On Mayer Road (TR 421), Port Royal, Milford Township, Pennsylvania.
Directions: In Port Royal, Pennsylvania at the jct. of SR 75 and
SR 333, go west on SR 333 for 0.2 mile to Mayer Road (TR 421). Turn
left on Mayer Road (TR 421) to the bridge. The bridge is on private
property formerly owned by the Lehmans. Please acquire permission before
entering the property. The original 1888 double Burr arch bridge
was toppled by the Hurricane Agnes Storm in 1972. The Lehmans had
the bridge rebuilt in 1993 from the original timbers, but not with the
original truss design. It is now a two-span, steel supported stringer
structure, with two Burr type arches attached to the interior in order
to make the bridge appear more authentic. It is covered with weather-beaten,
vertical boards on the sides and portals. It has a red metal roof
and a deck of lengthwise planking. A plaque on the structure
indicates the bridges name is "Lehman's Bridge." However, when the
World Guide Number was assigned it was known as the "Lehman Covered
Bridge" with a alternate name of the "Port Royal Covered
Bridge. Also known as the McCulloch's Covered Bridge and
the Mayer's Covered Bridge. It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on August 10, 1979. (Sep 2006) |
