Lime Valley Covered Bridge
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-36-23)  (WGCB PA-36-23)  (1871; restored c. mid 1990's; repaired c. 2000 )  A single-span Burr arch truss 103' 10" over Pequea Creek.  Located:  On Brenneman Road, Lime Valley, Pennsylvania, between West Lampeter and Strasburg Townships, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  In the village of Lime Valley, Pennsylvania, just south of Lime Valley Road, on Brenneman Road. Constructed in in 1871 at a cost of $3,500.  The structure is supported on stone and mortar abutments that extend to form long wing walls and parapets.  The sides of the bridge are covered with red board and batten siding, and the portals display white vertical boards without batten. The deck is covered with heavy lengthwise planking.  In 1972, Hurricane Agnes caused waters of eighteen inches to rise over the floor of the bridge, yet it remained standing.  In the mid 1990’s some restoration work was done on the bridge.  In 2000 there was noticeable damage to the portals caused by tall vehicles, and some damage to the siding which was apparently caused by the high flood waters of the 1999 hurricane season. When photographed in October 2004, that damage has been repaired.   A family that once lived near the bridge used to raised tomatoes and, as the story is told, they hauled one load of tomatoes weighing twenty-three tons over the bridge.  Also known as the Pequea 8 Covered Bridge, and the Strasburg Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980.  (Oct 2004
