County, Pennsylvania
(WGN

1996-97; damaged 1999; repaired c. 1999) A single-span Burr
arch truss 114' 7" over Big Elk Creek. Located: On King Row
Road (TR 310), Elk Township, Pennsylvania. Directions: In Hickory
Hill, Pennsylvania from the jct. of Lewisville Road (SR 472) and Hickory
Hill Road (TR 344), go southeast on Lewisville Road (SR 472) approximately
0.4 mile to King Row Road (TR 360), turn left on King Row Road (TR 360)
and go north 0.8 mile to the bridge. It was closed in the spring
of 1996 because of flood damage to the underpinnings. Reconstruction
was done during 1996 and 1997, and it reopened in August 1997. Repairs
included the addition of concrete reinforcements to the original stone
and mortar abutments and five heavy, lengthwise, I-beams placed under a
steel deck. The bridges siding was damaged by hurricane flood waters in
1999. The damage had been repaired when we visited on June 2, 2008.
The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments, and has stone and mortar
wing walls and parapets capped with concrete. The sides are covered
with boards and batten siding, white painted horizontal clapboard covers
the portals. The floor consists of crosswise two by eight inch
grooved planks and it has a shake roof. It was listed on the National
Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980. (Jun 2008)
