Martin's Mill Covered Bridge
Franklin County, Pennsylvania 
(WGN 38-28-01)  (WGCB PA-28-01):   (1839; rebuilt 1973; refurbished 1991-95; rededicated 1995 ; restored 1998) A two-span Town lattice truss 206' over Conocheague Creek.  Located:  SW of Greencastle, Pennsylvania on West Weaver Road (TR 341), AntrimTownship, Pennsylvania. Directions: From I-81, Exit 3, Greencastle, Pennsylvania, go West on SR 16 2.7 miles and bear left (South) onto Hill Road 1.9 miles. Then left (South) onto Worleytown Road 0.7 mi and turn right (West) onto Weaver Road [West Weaver Road] (TR 341) 0.3 mi to the bridge. Second longest remaining authentic covered bridge and longest Town truss in Pennsylvania. Originally built by Jacob Shirk. All but destroyed by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, entirely rebuilt in 1973. The bridge was closed to traffic in 1986. It was extensively refurbished from 1991 to 1995. In 1993, Green-Castle Metal Works installed four steel frames to brace the bridge, and Geesaman-Rock Construction, Inc., Zullinger, Pennsylvania shored up and leveled the bridge. The cost of the work was estimated at $37,000. Then in 1993, the central stone pier was rebuilt, and volunteers stripped and repainted the entire structure. The bridge was rededicated on Sunday, August 13, 1995. In 1998, a $58,000 Grant was received to divert water from the bridge pier and abutments, and to stabilize the banks and surrounding trees with supports. With the trusses stabilized, a rebuilt center pier, new cedar shake roof, new siding, new portals, and new paint the restoration of the bridge was complete. The bridge is currently only open to vehicular traffic four times a year - Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, and the second week of December. Also known as the Martins Mill Covered Bridge and the Shindle Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places February 15, 1974. (May 2004)
