Mays Covered Bridge
Washington County, Pennsylvania
(WGN 38-63-23)  (WGCB PA-63-23)  (1882; repaired early 1900's)  A single-span Queenpost truss 39' 9" over Middle Wheeling Creek.  Located:  On Waynesburg Road, approximately 1 mile southeast of West Alexander, Donegal Township, Pennsylvania.  Directions:  Just north of West Alexander, Pennsylvania, at the jct. of SR 40 and West Liberty Street (SR 3005), go south on West Liberty Street (SR 3005) for 0.35 mile to Main Street.  Turn left on Main Street and go 0.45 mile to Lynn Street; turn right on Lynn Street and go 1.4 miles to the bridge.  (Note:  After 0.6 mile Lynn Street becomes Waynesburg Road.)  The bridge is located on a remote, gravel township road in a secluded valley.  It should be noted that even after repairs were made to the bridge in the early 1900's, as late as 1952, more than 100 years after its 1882 construction, most of the original pine siding remains on the bridge.  This structure has outlived the record of its origins with the exception of its known date of construction.  It is covered with vertical boards on both the sides and the portals and is painted barn red inside and outside.  The bridge has a sheet metal roof and a deck of crosswise planking with two windows on each side as well as the narrow eave openings.  The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments that extend into short, stone and mortar wing walls and parapets and has additional timber trestles that rest in the streambed and support the deck.  Also known as the May's Blaney Covered Bridge and the Blaney Covered Bridge.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1979.  (Apr 2005)
